Building nonviolent way in indonesia

By Akhmad Arif Junaidi

The history notes that some series of violent conflicts and actions   happened in Indonesia such as reformation movement in 1998, Madura-Dayak conflict in West Kalimantan, Aceh Independence Movement (GAM), Christian-Moslem conflict in Ambon, Papua Independence Movement (GPM), Ahmadiyah conflict in Bogor and Mataram, political conflicts in some local election and some family conflicts. What can be learned from the history is that the violent conflicts and actions are mainly in purpose created by one or some small groups taking benefits from the conflicts and actions. They take as many as political and economical benefits from the conflicts and actions. They sometime directly involve in the conflicts and actions, but they are very often outside of the circle of the conflict. They will keep maintaining the violent conflicts as far as they still can take the benefits. It is absolutely not wise to let self-role drift in the game of the irresponsible groups.

Due to the violent way, the conflicts and actions are never successful in   removing regime, building a better system, implementing human right in all levels of society, reducing corruption and securing a peaceful future. In addition, use of violent way always makes the conflict escalating and creating new ones. What can be learned from history of violent conflicts and actions worldwide is that the only result of the violent way is suffering. Nonviolent way destroys social life, buildings and infrastructure of human life.

What must be hit in the conflicts and actions is the problem not human. Use of violent way can hit human, but it can not hit ideas, hopes, ideology, decisions and policies. To think proportionally is   absolutely needed here. However, the violent way kills not only role of the victim in the conflicts and actions but also all roles the victim have. It is not specific enough to separate the different role. Use of violent way can kill all forms of life sooner or later. There is no winner in violent way, the all involving elements lose. That is why the violent way must be left. There is no word “violent way” anymore, because the violent way is morally incorrect.

All conflicts and actions can basically be solved and done through nonviolent way. Learning from the protest to the Segregation Law of United States, Indian and South African civil disobedience cases, the nonviolent way is even more effective and powerful in sending message. It is more successful in removing regime, building a better system, implementing human right in all levels of society, reducing corruption and securing a peaceful future. The nonviolent is the only way to express ideas, hopes and   choices in which all elements of society, even children and old people, can participate in. To create the good ends must consider the good means. The ends can not be separated from the means. If someone takes care of the means he is bound of reach the end sooner or later.

However, successful story of nonviolent way in the past can not be copied in the present. The past situation in which the nonviolent way is used had the   different characteristic from the present one. That is why the nonviolent way also requires special skills in adjustment from one place to another one. But the basic values and spirit of nonviolent way in the past can be used in the present nonviolent way.

The nonviolent way is not easy, but it is not impossible thing. The nonviolent way is nurtured and strengthened by community, relation   building, ongoing education, exercises and practices. It requires training and experiences in creativity, love, discipline, patience and courage. The continuing special training and experience are helpful in shaping lifestyle of the nonviolent way. Nonviolent way also seeks discipline of all involving elements. It also needs self-internalization of society since nonviolent is not only about technique and lifestyle but also culture.

In Indonesian context, to build the nonviolent way is a difficult thing since the violent way has been becoming culture of daily life. The life of Indonesian people has been shaped in the violent culture. The all happening conflicts have shown on how Indonesian people were customized by the violent culture. The current violent demonstration causing the death of the Chairman of Local Representative Body of North Sumatra, Indonesia on February 3th 2009 shows that the nonviolent way is still far away from Indonesia. It seeks hard work of all elements such as the central and local government, security apparatus, religion community and peace activists to build. Although it is not easy to build the nonviolent way in Indonesia, it must be done from now on!
